Boyne Hill showed their strength of character in a hard fought game which saw them do the “double” over Barton this season. Winning the toss, Barton elected to play down hill with the wind behind them, giving them an advantage in atrocious weather conditions of driving rain and gusty winds.
Barton took an early lead after chipping Joe Maskrey in goal. Possession was then even for the next spell of play, but Barton added their second after 24 mins, with a firm shot from the edge of the box into the bottom right hand corner, that left the keeper no chance.
Hill kept their nerve and just before half time pulled one back after Brandon Trillow cleared from just outside the box and sent it over the top of everyone, allowing Luke Irvine to make a long run through and take a 20 yrd shot over the top of the keeper. Barton were denied their third by a magnificent save from Joe Maskrey after pushing a shot to the top right corner over the bar.
Hill started strongly and dominated the first ten minutes of the second half. However, for a moment the defence seemed to go to sleep, allowing Barton to slip through and put one past Paul Wilson, now in goal, stretching their lead to 3-1. This seemed to rally Hill, who came back out even stronger, but despite dominating the play and hitting the woodwork several times, could not seem to find the back of the net.
Finally, with ten minutes left on the clock, after a goal mouth scramble in the Barton area, Callum Jenkins lofted the ball over the keeper to narrow the scoreline to 3-2. Sensing the game was theirs, Hill got stuck in immediately, winning the ball in midfield and sending it through to Luke Irvine to claim his second and more importantly, equalise 3-3, with just 5 minutes left on the clock.
Not satisfied with a draw the Hill continued their relentless pressure and with just two minutes left fought their way into the Barton box, forcing a panic stricken Barton defence to score an own goal in attempting to clear the line, which would certainly have been jumped upon by a marauding Luke Irvine, breathing down their necks. Hill then stayed firm and kept Barton at bay for the reminding time on the clock.
A gutsy and determined performance by all was epitomised by Ricky Roberts, awarded "Player of the Match", with relentless running and dogged determination to grind out a result.
